Today marks a significant milestone for BIOMED as we proudly complete 24 years of dedicated service to the people of Barak Valley. It was on February 20, 2000, that BIOMED embarked on its journey as a Collection Centre of Specialty Ranbaxy Ltd, with its Reference Lab situated at MIDC andheri East, Mumbai. At that time, we stood as the sole source for Thyroid testing not only for the people of Barak Valley but also for the neighboring states of Mizoram, Manipur and Tripura.
In the year 2000, the landscape of diagnostic testing was different and obtaining a Thyroid test posed a challenge. People had to travel to Guwahati or Kolkata for a thyroid test, conducted through a method called RIA. It was during this time that Specialty Ranbaxy Lab introduced thyroid testing by the CIA method (Chemilluminescence), replacing the hazardous and outdated RIA method. This groundbreaking move was priced at ₹550, a cost that remains unchanged even today for our T3, T4, TSH tests.
During those early days, the competition was scarce, with only two labs in Silchar offering thyroid tests through the ELISA method, charging significantly higher fees. BIOMED, despite having no sales coverage from the company until 2002, prioritized transparency and customer satisfaction. We implemented software billing, a novel concept at the time, ensuring accuracy and reliability in our billing practices. The challenges were formidable, with the absence of email culture and expensive internet services. Urgent reports were received through FAX and telephone calls were made through STD, highlighting the determination to provide quality services to our customers.
Our journey began in an 80 sq feet room, blessed by the support of esteemed teachers like Manmath Nath Sir, Giridhari Kar Sir, A S Baishya Sir and others. Over the years, BIOMED has evolved into a comprehensive healthcare provider, offering not only Pathology & Microbiology testing but also boasting full-fledged High-End Radiology, Endoscopy & Colonoscopy services and state-of-the-art facilities for Specialized Dentistry.
One of our proudest achievements is the introduction of the first top-of-the-class CBCT (Cone Beam CT/ Dental CT Scan) in the region. This facility is poised to transform Dentistry in Barak Valley, attracting medical tourists and establishing the region as a Dental Hub in the coming years.
